May – Save Your [Quilt] Story Challenge

Follow along with me as I participate in the 2024 Save Your Story Challenge by Quilt Alliance. You can find all of my blog posts that are part of this challenge.

Next up for the Quilt Alliance Save Your Story Challenge – quilt labels! The email arrived on May 11 with the full details:

This challenge is an interesting and simple one for me. I have never purchased or acquired any quilts. No one in my immediate or extended family is a quilter, so the only quilts I have are the ones I have made. I do have a list (actually a file in MS Word) of every quilt I have made. On this list is the number/order of when I made the quilt, when it was completed, what are its measurements, and if it was gifted/donated. The list is a long one! Yesterday, I completed my 141st quilt.

I have never put a label on any of my quilts. I first learned to quilt during a class held at JoAnn Fabrics, and when I finished the quilt, the instructor encouraged all of us in the class to sign, date, and number each quilt we make. Since this was my first one, it was easy to get started on this pathway.

Apparently, my signature hasn’t changed much over the years – or my style of notation on the back of each quilt. For example, this is my 100th quilt, part of my Stories from the South Atlantic Ocean collection.

Do I need more than this on the back of each of my quilts? Is a label necessary? I guess I’ll find out in next month’s Save Your Story Challenge! To date, I have four collections of quilts I have created. Each collection has the quilts featured on a page with a full description of the story and context for the individual quilts.

My collections include:

As I use these quilts for education and outreach, I think there is too much information to include on the back – but maybe a little more would be helpful? Again, I’m looking forward to reflecting upon this some more. We’ll see if my 142nd quilt has a different notation on the back from my last one…
