This quilt is the final quilt (#19) in my Stories from the South Atlantic Ocean quilt collection. I have so enjoyed generating so many quilts that share some of the history of scientific ocean drilling, the history of the South Atlantic Transect, and our work and life at sea. Some of the quilts used traditional quilting patterns, some were made as data visualizations, and some, such as this final one, are “gamified” and have a puzzle for viewers to solve.

The blue and red colors in the center section of the quilt represent the two colors found on the hull of JOIDES Resolution. These fabrics are also a Da Gama Textile (Three Cats Shweshwe) manufactured in South Africa, where the ship departed from/returned to for my time at sea during Expedition 390. The top ship graphic is a design created by one of my co-chief scientists, Rosalind (Roz) Coggon and is available on Spoonflower.com as JOIDES Resolution Sunset on the South Atlantic Transect. The background fabric is Laurel Burch Basics Dark Purple Wave Metallic Fabric. Longarm quilting services were provided by The Old Country Store Fabrics in Intercourse, PA.

Quilt measures 44 inches tall by 38 inches wide and was completed on September 22, 2023.
