AK – Gulf of Alaska fisheries survey with NOAA

In 2023, I had the amazing opportunity to sail as a Teacher At Sea with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the second time. [My first expedition with NOAA was in 2014 on NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson for a hydrographic survey in the North Atlantic Ocean]

My 2023 journey with NOAA started in 2019 when I applied and was accepted to sail a second time. I was going to sail in 2020 – but then, we know what happened. I was scheduled in 2022 and actually journeyed to Kodiak, Alaska, to join NOAA Ship Oscar Dyson – but then, the delays continued (see Still waiting for my ships to sail… my journey back to the ocean).

The good news (no, GREAT NEWS) is that I was able to head back to Alaska in June 2023 and join Oscar Dyson for Leg 1 of the Gulf of Alaska Summer Alaska Walleye Pollock Acoustic-Trawl Survey. Below are links to the blog posts I wrote for NOAA, which start with a broad overview of NOAA and NOAA Fisheries, then some details about Oscar and Peggy Dyson, our instrumentation and collecting data at sea, and the creative project I carried out on the ship, Stitching the Sky at Sea (also featured on NOAA Teacher At Sea Alumni blog).

Our ship sailed past Mount Shishaldin, the tallest volcanic mountain in the Aleutian Islands!

Again, all of these posts are located on the NOAA Teacher At Sea website and are duplicated here on Journeys of Dr. G. I can’t wait to start sharing NOAA’s work ensuring a sustainable fisheries with my students and broader audiences!
