(*If you missed my first post on my JOIDES Resolution adventure, I encourage you to start with DrGw390 – Week of quarantine. All posts will be tagged with #DrGw390.)
We spent from April 20 thru May 5 at Hole U1556B. This post has a collection of my tweets from the coring at our first hole for Expedition 390, before heading to do additional holes at this site.
🎶We're hhheeerrrreeee…..🎶

The Google Earth screenshot on the right shows that @theJR has arrived at its first destination for #EXP390! Dynamic thrusters were checked and lowered. Soon, the coring begins! #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/jiAM5Nu5Oa
Question: What can make a group of scientists drop everything and gather in front of a viewing screen?
— Dr. G (@guertin) April 21, 2022
Answer: A livestream of @TheJR trying to get the drill bit into its first #EXP390 re-entry cone, located ~5,000 m below the sea surface. #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/G3csRBoaF7
Happy #EarthDay2022! On @theJR #EXP390, we're reflecting how scientific ocean drilling and our work connects to this year's #EarthDay theme, Invest In Our Planet. (*And shows the latest mini #quilt in our Mess Hall!) #SciQuilt #SciComm https://t.co/3HbNlcZ6au

Everyone on @TheJR #EXP390 day shift is currently posting rainbow photos on social media… 🌈 #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/fy2YXIccih

What an incredible day on @TheJR. To be present when the first core came up for our expedition and to share that moment with others… I’m so appreciative to be a part of a community that is supportive, passionate, and geeks out about science like I do. #EXP390 #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/iNOHLBZqL3

I enjoy this view of @TheJR catwalk- it looks like arms/hands ready to receive core (& they have been busy already on #EXP390!) #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/byQSCBAa21

I didn't realize when I took this photo that all 4 people pictured are #WomenInSTEM. It's incredible to reflect back to DSDP Leg 3, when no women were part of the scientific shipboard party (yet Leg 2 had one of the first women to sail on Glomar Challenger, Dr. Catherine Nigrini) https://t.co/id4NYvmW7y

Today was the first day I saw a ship on the water since we left Cape Town (April 12). You would think everyone would be overjoyed to see another ship – instead, everyone was shouting "Go away! We're one day from ending our COVID protocols on @theJR!" #EXP390 #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/6ckCbEOeaT

Final rapid antigen test today – let it be true that our masks come off tomorrow! Seriously, I greatly appreciate the time/resources into making sure we are healthy/safe as we increase ocean exploration & scientific ocean drilling in a continuing pandemic. @TheJR #EXP390 #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/wd1nKqbPGT

Is it a coincidence that this sign is above the @TheJR geochemistry laboratory, when this is exactly how I felt every time I attended my organic chemistry lecture/laboratory in college? #EXP390 #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/02gXs3FDqM

Lots of masks went into the recycle bin today. And it was amazing to start giving ship tours without a mask, without my glasses fogging up… trust me, mask + glasses + safety glasses over them = one of my biggest challenges to manage on the ship! #DrGw390 https://t.co/dPrBo6i56k

You are very welcome! And as the sun sets on your #EXP390 ship-to-shore experience, don't forget that we are here to answer any follow-up questions, and @TheJR tours are available for classes in future semesters! For those sailing on @TheJR (currently on #EXP390 or a future expedition) – note that if you accidentally leave a pair of gloves from the lab in your pants pocket and send your pants through the laundry, the gloves will survive and your clothes will not be damaged! #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/ybbF518RJc

We've made a @univmiami connection on @theJR! I'm an alum of @UMiamiRSMAS marine geosciences, and Leonardo Tamborrino spend 3 months on Virginia Key collaborating with Dr. Gregor Eberli, who served on my dissertation committee. #EXP390 #DrGw390 #umiami @UM_alumni pic.twitter.com/yqTs3vRr9F

So nice to be able to enjoy some social activities on @TheJR now that our COPE period is over. Conference room tables can now become great ping-pong tables! (we’re not picky about how uneven they are, after working a 12-hour shift) 🏓 #EXP390 #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/Z150G2ApN1

Starting to see things in @theJR surroundings… students on ship-to-shore broadcasts want to know if I've seen whales and dolphins – I've been telling them I've see birds and cargo ships. At least I spotted a fish this evening! #EXP390 #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/ihW7VWqiXP

I have no idea why I was inspired by John Denver’s “Country Roads Take Me Home”, but it was too easy to turn it into…
🎼 We're still drilling

now at Core 40 🎶
🎼 depth of 542 (m)
52% recovery 🎶@theJR #EXP390 #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/PGc35juso3
We had a visitor today… a whale came by @TheJR! Nothing sends scientists scrambling outside like the announcement: "Attention on board. Whale off the port side." The whale circled the ship a few times then headed back out to sea.#EXP390 #DrGw390https://t.co/8RhE3N7PTe

I'm excited to do a special tour of JOIDES Resolution for K-12 teachers/faculty to see how science at sea can be incorporated into your classroom and career discussions with students! Join me to learn about #EXP390 and hear from scientists on board @theJR! https://t.co/PiCMeScM4N
— Dr. G (@guertin) May 2, 2022
And I'm so appreciative of the scientists on board @theJR #EXP390 jumping in to do some teaching for these classrooms during our ship-to-shore broadcasts. We wear many hats as scientists, educators, & communicators! #TeacherAppreciationWeek #ThankATeacher #SciComm #DrGw390 https://t.co/VTk4Ic0CUo

Students have asked me if it rains on the ocean. I'm sure this question is coming from how the water/hydrologic cycle is drawn in textbooks & places online. We need to explain the multiple parts of the "cycle" & help students realize it is not a "circle". @theJR #EXP390 #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/vAHQOZTcGa

Sometimes, the little things on @TheJR can put a big smile on your face – like coming back to your room & seeing a new bath towel folded up in the shape of a flower #EXP390 #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/wr79oxtj4l
— Dr. G (@guertin) May 3, 2022
For #StarWarsDay, I made a #StarWars mini-#quilt to hang in the Mess Hall on @theJR – we also had a vote to see who is the favorite Star Wars character for those on #EXP390. A fun addition to the expedition! #MayThe4thBeWithYou #MayThe4th #DrGw390 #SciArt pic.twitter.com/yiuOagKIif

New day, new whale! (or… maybe it's the same one hanging around our ship?) We're still debating whether it is a fin or sei whale. @theJR #EXP390 #DrGw390 pic.twitter.com/ySW41NO4yM

I haven’t been posting core photos – the story of the cores and the amazing sediment/rock sequences we’re uncovering will be shared by the scientists soon enough! Stay tuned….
