In school, I had only learned about tropical rainforests. I explored my first temperate rainforest in Alaska! Hiking through Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park offers incredible views and a chance to get to know your new shipmates.
On Saturday, I departed from home. Sunday, I found my new destination. It wasn't a direct route - I took three flights and am now located four time zones away. Journeys start with a compass and direction forward, and you end up where you are meant to be.
#FrontDoorScience continues with mini-quilts that call attention to species given protection by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Each month, I'm swapping out the quilts and the science information supporting them. May is calling attention to bees. #DidYouKnow that the rusty patched bumblebee is the 1st and only bumblebee species native to the continental U.S. listed as endangered? The IUCN Red List has 18 species of bees as endangered and 9 as critically endangered.
One of my favorite photos I took on @joides_resolution last year was a sunset view from the stern of the ship. I took that sunset photo from the South Atlantic Ocean and shifted it to looking out at a daytime sky, filled with clouds, while standing on the red-colored deck behind the yellow railing.
