My motivation for creating quilts is not to win ribbons or awards, but I am honored when a quilt is recognized for my design and storytelling.
SEVA Excellence Award 2025
The Special Interest Group for Environmental Mathematics of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) hosted an exhibit in Sacramento, CA, set up as a tessellation of regular-hexagonal-shaped sustainability and environmental visual artworks. My quilt It Begins with the Ocean Biome was selected for one of the awards. A description of the quilt is available in this blog post, and I have included a short video overview of the quilt below.
BTAA Data Viz Championship
The Big Ten Academic Alliance hosts an annual celebration for International Love Data Week, a global celebration that promotes good data practices and encourages collaboration around research data management, sharing, preservation, and reuse. Each university in the Big Ten holds seminars and other data-themed events, including a data visualization challenge. A faculty/staff and student winner are selected for each institution, which then is forwarded on to the national level for the title of national Data Viz Champion.
2025 BTAA Data Viz Champion – Penn State University
My data quilt Versus, documenting the college football meet-ups between Penn State and University of Nebraska, was selected as the winner in Penn State’s faculty/staff category. You can read about the quilt on this blog post, and I have included a short video overview of the quilt below.
2024 BTAA Data Viz Champion – National
My quilt Blue Skies and Cloud Cover was selected as the Penn State champion and BTAA national champion. A full description of the quilt is available on this blog post, and I also posted a summary of what it was like to be a part of Love Data Week 2024.
